The classroom will usually be open by 8.35 am each morning. Children should not be at school before this time, as there is very limited supervision for them. During this time students are expected to get themselves organised for the day. Take home folders must be returned to school each day, as they will be used to carry newsletters, homework, home reading books and spelling words.
Drink bottles: Particularly during the summer months, we encourage the students to bring in a sipper bottle of water. This reduces the need for students to leave the room during class time and it also improves their concentration. Bottles should only contain water.
Homework: This gives children a chance to practice skills and consolidate concepts learned at school. At year 2 level we expect children to spend about 20-30 minutes each day engaged in the activity of learning.
Home Reading: Children are expected to be reading a text selected for them by the class teacher in their correct level. They will have the opportunity to choose from home/personal books if required. Please listen to your child read orally for at least 5 minutes, the rest of the time they can read silently.
Spelling: We will be using a spelling program in 2017 called Sound Waves, individual spelling lists will be coming home every Friday afternoon with 10 personal highlighted words to learn each week.
Birthdays are special occasions, and we enjoy celebrating them at school. We are introducing something new for birthdays and phasing out the bringing in of food items. So this means no more cupcakes, but instead we will encourage each child to bring in a wrapped book to give to the class on their special day, their name will be written inside the front cover and it will become part of the classroom library. We will read their "Birthday Book" together as a whole class. If your child has a birthday in the school holidays, please choose another date to send in the book so that we can celebrate at school.
Library: Children have the opportunity to borrow books in their own time either before school every day and at lunchtimes Mon-Thurs; up to 2 books can be borrowed at any one time. Please encourage your child to visit the library regularly. We will also have a book borrowing session as a whole class every Tuesday afternoon.
